A FEW WORDS ON THE MUSICIANS
DAVIDE BALULA [Paris, France] Folksinger, gifted songwriter, conceptual juggernaut, experimentated experimentator, Davide Balula is all of these things at the same time. His music blends guitar digressions and electronic wizardry, unified through the mingling textures of his frail voice and words. http://davide.balula.free.fr / www.activesuspension.org
ANDRÉ HERMAN DÜNE [Paris, France] André Herman Düne is an active member of the french band Herman Düne. The first tracks of this project outside Herman Düne is a cassette recorded on an answering machine, but today it s quite untraceable. It doesn t really matters, cause André is very productive, a few discs are available in the stores, but you can mail him to order some of his records. www.hermandune.com
BOGUS [Paris, France] In the clinics, there are the weirdos and the doctors and many little microbes who live and grow everywhere. Some of them make noises, by destroying medical instruments and opening wounds. They don t like clinics. They wanna go beachin . So they started a band. Bogus is Mark Kerr and Cosmo Vitelli www.imacliche.com
DONNA REGINA [Köln, Germany] Donna Regina consists of Regina Janssen on vocals, Gunter Janssen on guitars and Steffen Irlinger, the author of electronic sounds and samples, who joined the band while they were working on the music for the album A Quiet Week in the House . Their music is best described as a puzzling mixture of warm, analogue songs with a hint of ethereal indie rock. They released something like 9 albums on various labels (karaoke Kalk, Strange Ways), French Label Tricatel released a compilation in 2004. www.donnaregina.net
SATANICPORNOCULTSHOP [Tokyo / Osaka, Japan] Puzzling hip hop with a surrealistic touch and new technology know-how. They are the latest aburdists; it s as if Fluxus were spying on pop music hits from 80 s and vice versa. Slightly satirical with a fancy for disco and ultimate grooves; cultivating a limitless yet always tasty musical flavor, they brilliantly summarize all current musical trends with great modesty. They have advanced the art of covering so far to even make covers of their own covers. Their action of covering is clearly not a mere stylistic exercise. You can witness their creativity errupting out of their borrowing, similar to the brilliance of the quotations in Walter Benjamin s Arcades Project . They transcend sampling approach to reach something that could be called quote art , a musical transposition of visual and verbal collage, techniques in which they also excel. www.nunulaxnulan.biz/satanicpornocultshop.html
HARCO PRONT [Eindhoven / Nederland] Harco pront s music mixes the eclectisism of Beck, the soul of d Angelo and the funk of early Prince recordings or Jimi Tenor. His raw, uncompromising audio-miniatures reveal a richness in ideas and authenticity that is rarely encountered in modern pop/dance music. Harco Pront (electronics, vocals, guitars) easily switches between raw electro-funk & deranged soul-hybrids. Deeply embedded in that original dirty funk feel, Harco Pront s songs have one thing in common, they groove like hell. www.musicforspeakers.com
SPORT HIT PARADISE [New York / USA] Sport Hit Paradise is the musical project of french artist Elisabeth Arkhipoff. More Infos? www.sport-hit-paradise.com / www.romanticsurf.com/shp.html
DANIEL WANG [Berlin / Germany] Born in Northern California, Daniel Wang spent 8 years of his childhood in Taiwan, returned to California for high school, and attended university in New York and Chicago. Instead of finishing his papers, however, he ran out to underground clubs and danced all night to early house music and disco classics, befriending and learning from a few old-school voguers and DJs along the way. Dissatisfied with the increasingly unmusical soundtrack of modern nightlife, Danny started Balihu Records in 1993. The first release became a cult success. Danny moved back to NYC and eventually found a job at Dr. Sound Music Store, where he delved deeply into vintage production gear and synths, including the Theremin. Balihu put out a range of unusual tracks from 1994 to 2000 in the spirit of Philly and Italo Disco, and Wang began producing for the Environ label in 1997. In the past 2 years, he has performed around the world, and his originality is gradually being recognized.
THE SOFT PINK TRUTH [Los Angeles / USA] Drew Daniel is a member of the electronica band Matmos (they produced and toured with Björk), he records solo under the moniker of The Soft Pink Truth. His last album is an album of covers of punk rock and hardcore tunes. The soft Pink Truth means: Tender Hedonist, Exemplar Sexual Of Frisco Tearooms, Pete Is Naked, Kneeling, Throat Rendering Unbelievably Terrific Head www.brainwashed.com/spt
COSMO VITELLI [Paris / France] Cosmo Vitelli released LPs & singles for Solid rds, Paris, and later Virgin. Many remixes for the likes of Daft Punk, Cassius, Electronicat, Super Discount, Scratch Massive, etc... and stuffs for labels Kitsune, Source, Marketting... He created his own label, I m a cliché, in early 2004, which released materials from Simian Mobile Disco, Aysam, C.H.E, Yuksek, Tacteel, Domenico Torti and of course Cosmo Vitelli. He s part of he producer duo Bot Ox, with Julien Briffaz from tekel, and is also working on BOGUS first LP, another duo he created with Mark Kerr. www.fotolog.com/cosmovitelli / www.imacliche.com
EDISON WOODS [New York / USA] Edison Woods is directed by Julia Frodahl and produces both music and performance art. Edison Woods has released two albums. The most recent, Seven principles of leave no trace , was released in October 2003 by Germany s Gillterhouse records, and by habit of Creation in New York. Flavorpill (NYC) says: A beautiful cross between the sounds of Elysian Fields and sentiments of David Lynch, Edison Woods two albums stand as testament to the exquisite delicacy and mysterious power of their unique brand of burlesque slowcore . www.edisonwoods.net
COLLEEN [Paris / France] It seems a shame to tarnish the delicate perfection of Colleen s music with words this is music that needs to be listened to late at night, free of everyday distractions. Colleen s simple but effortlessly charming music is one of magical details naïve instrumentals filled with warmth, melody and soul, played on a broken music box, a glockenspiel or a guitar, phasing in and out, on the verge of collapse. Above all, this is wonderfully human. www.colleenplays.org / www.theleaflabel.com
WOMEN AND CHILDREN [Vincennes / New York / France / USA] Women and Children began in Paris 2001. Friends June Serwa (Canada) Kevin Lasting (USA) Jamie Moon (USA) and Olivier Robert (France) began by experimenting with electronic sound freak outs in their living room, this has developed into more traditional song forms using guitar, voice, piano, bass and drums. At the center of many of their songs is the voice of June Serwa. They have toured America, Europe, and Australia as the opening band for the group Cat Power and have shared the stage with various other fine artists. Their self titled debut album came out on Attacknine Records in 2002 and they are set to release a new collection of music and images on the English label Hallso in April 2005. They played ATP Festival (curated by Vincent Gallo in 2005). www.artdirection.com.au/images/wandc / www.atpfestival.com
